City Council Meetings

I learned the other day that at least one person thought that meetings of the City Council are not open to the public or that attendance is discouraged.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Meetings of the City Council are open to the public.  On behalf of your current City Council members (Mayor Beach Hall, Mayor Pro-Tem Debra Greene, Gary Nowak, Tom Sobeck, and Dana Labar), I encourage the public to attend these meetings!  Regular City Council meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the first and third Tuesday of each month at City Hall.  Special meetings and workshops are held at the request of the Mayor or two Council members with posting of 18 hours or more.  Meeting notices are always posted on the front door of City Hall.

Everyone who attends Council meetings has an opportunity to speak about whatever they feel is important.  Further, the Open Meetings Act requires the city to make these meetings open to the public.

Public Hearing for New Zoning Ordinance

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to take written or verbal comments on the proposed new Zoning Ordinance at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 24, 2011 at City Hall.

Zoning is very important to the future develoment of the community.  Zoning can prevent or encourage development and economic growth.  Also, zoning is key to protecting the "quiet enjoyment" and other property rights of property owners.  Our new zoning ordinance tries to strike the proper balance between various competing values.

You can review the new Zoning Ordinance at http://www.rogerscity.com/

A paper copy is available for your review at both City Hall and the Rogers City Public Library.

If you are unable to attend the public hearing, but wish to make comment, you can send your comments via email to City Hall: mslown@rogerscity.com and/or tkoss@rogerscity.com

Special City Council Meeting--Marina Bonds

At 8:00 am on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, the City Council will hold a Special Meeting to discuss and possibly take action to set a public hearing for Issue of Bonds to refinance the current Marina Bonds.
The Marina currently has about $300,000 in bond debt.

The City is considering refinancing this debt to help solve cash flow problems associated with the Municipal Marina.  The debt was incurred in the 1990's and 2000 when the Marina was attracting many more boaters that we see now.  The debt would be spread over a longer period, but at a lower yearly payment amount which the Marina's current revenue will support.

If you have questions about this issue or wish to express an opinion, please come to the special meeting, or send an email to me at mslown@rogerscity.com or to the City Clerk, Terri Koss tkoss@rogerscity.com
